A deck-staining quote should explain how the existing surface will be prepared. Cleaning is a separate available service, but cleaning alone does not necessarily settle old-coating compatibility or other preparation requirements.
Photograph the existing coating
Include bare boards, shaded areas and any peeling or uneven finish. Identify the old product if you know it. Those details help distinguish a cleaning request from a refinishing request.
Ask about the steps before the finish
Request a written scope for cleaning, any stripping or sanding, and the proposed product. Ask how weather and the actual product instructions affect the time between preparation, application and using the deck again.
